Eight Fellowships were awarded

 

European Visiting Research Fellowships 2006

The Foundation awarded eight Fellowships for research and travel within Europe as indicated.

For travel from Europe to Scotland

Dr Guido Alfani, Istituto di Storia Economica, Universita commerciale L. Bocconi, Italy to visit the Department of History, University of Glasgow to extend his research on the geographic distribution, intensity and cultural consequences of the plague of 1630 across Italy.

Dr Javier Calle Martin, Department of English Philology, University of Malaga to visit the Department of English Language, University of Glasgow to continue collaborative work on the digitisation and editing of the vernacular mediaeval medical manuscripts in the Hunterian Collection of the Glasgow University Library.

Dr Alexander Pavlenko, Taganrog Institute of Management & Economics, Russia to visit the School of English, University of Aberdeen for work on a project comparing the historical development of Eastern Slavonic languages spoken in parts of the former USSR, with English & Scots in Lowland Scotland.

Dr Barbara Schaff, Department fur Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Universitat Munchen to visit the Department of English Literature, University of Edinburgh, to extend existing research examining the way in which Continental Europe was presented to the British tourist in the 19th century, with specific reference to the publications of John Murray.


For travel from Scotland to Europe

Ms Maria Fletcher, School of Law, University of Glasgow to visit the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, at the European University Institute, Florence to research in the library of the EUI in specific aspects of European Criminal Law for chapters in a book on EU Criminal Law & Justice.

Professor Brian Girvin, Department of Politics, University of Glasgow to visit the University of Aarhus, Denmark to complete the first stage of a project entitled, "Three Roads to Europe: A comparative study of Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands".

Dr Frank Muller, Department of Modern History, University of St Andrews to visit the Department of History, Freie Universitat Berlin to continue his research into German political history between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War, specifically focusing on the life of the German Emperor Friedrich III (son-in-law of Queen Victoria and father of Emerpor Wilhelm II).

Dr Jane Stuart-Smith, Department of English Lanugage, University of Glasgow to visit the Fachbereich Literatur und Sprachwissenschaften, Universitat Hannover, to extend her understanding of theoretical approaches in studying the influence of the media on language.
