The Foundation awarded two Postgraduate Scholarships to support young people carrying out three-year programmes of research leading to a PhD degree in a Scottish University. In both instances, the new Foundation Scholars will be working for their degrees in the universities from which they obtained their first degrees.
Juliet Linden Bicket, a Glasgow University graduate (MA & MLitt) in Scottish Language & Literature, for a project entitled "Finding the sacramental in the everyday: Catholicism in the work of George Mackay Brown". Her aim is to review and re-interpret the work of the Orcadian writer and challenge currently-accepted views of the influence of the Catholic orthodoxy in his writings.
Jennifer Behan, a graduate in Biochemistry & Pharmacology of Strathclyde University, for a project entitled "An evaluation of the biochemical mechanisms that may contribute to the failure of methadone therapy". Two possible factors will be investigated in depth:
