The Foundation awarded two Postgraduate Scholarships to support young people carrying out three-year programmes of research leading to a PhD degree in a Scottish University. In both instances, the new Foundation Scholars will be working for their degrees in the universities from which they obtained their first degrees.
Anne W. Bankier, a Glasgow University archaeology graduate, for a project entitled "An interdisciplinary analysis of the evidence of the Norse in northern Argyll". Her aim is to identify the period and extent of Norse settlement in the area of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, Morvern, Sunart and Ardgour - bounded by Lochs Sheil, Eil and Lhinne. The landscape and history of land use will be useful in understanding the reasons for Norse settlement in the area.
Fiona McAllister, a chemistry graduate of Edinburgh University, for a project entitled "The salivary proteome: developing tools for disease diagnosis". This project will investigate the protein content (proteome) of saliva and identify potential biomarkers in saliva which would be useful for the diagnosis of a range of diseases.
