Awards and Activities

To help it achieve its aim of promoting research of international standard in Scotland, the Foundation works closely with both the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

The Foundation provides support in five distinct ways:

Biomedical Research Fellowships for younger academic staff carrying out advanced work in the biomedical sciences in Scottish higher education and research institutions.
European Visiting Research Fellowships to enable scholars of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences from Europe to spend short periods working in Scotland and vice versa.
Postgraduate Scholarships for students undertaking research leading to a PhD degree in any subject in Scotland.
An annual Prize Lectureship, to bring to Scotland an academic of international repute - in a biomedical subject or in the field of arts and letters in alternate years.
An annual International Conference on aspects of the biomedical sciences.

The Foundation does not discriminate on grounds of gender, ethnicity, nationality or disability. It seeks only to appoint to its Fellowships and Scholarships those individuals whose applications have achieved excellent rankings following peer review and who will benefit most from the awards. It does, however, require that Fellows and Scholars live and work in Scotland during their tenure of the Foundation's award - except where the award is specifically for, or incorporates an approved period of, work outwith Scotland.
